What are the advantages and disadvantages of being organized as a nonprofit?

I started a small business the sole purpose of raising funds for Christian missions. The company's specialty packaging and shipping work, with all the benefits go far back into operations, employees, or to charity, with a minimum of 10% goes to charity (tithing). No dividend to our shareholders Topic (3 of us), and never its intention. I organized as private non-profit, because I said I would give more flexibility. We refer to us as a businestry "a hybrid company ministry. I wonder what others think? Was it good advice? We're planning a real business with regular customers, products and services, not just a charity. Everyone in our industry is profit. As for profit, I am concerned about the possibility of more or less equal employment and civil rights ... but I not seen many companies nonprofit retail store or transport there. We are somewhere in between. Argh? What is the best?

The formation of a non-profit is a great way to help your charitable cause. 4 reasons to profit. 1. nonprofit corporations have a tax exemption on income from corporate profits activities related to its purpose. 2. The requirements for tax exemption is more difficult for associations to corporations. Without tax-exempt, the group is unlikely to qualify for many government grants and private. 3. Donors can deduct gifts to your group in your state reporting and federal income once your organization becomes a nonprofit corporation exempt from tax. 4. Members and managers of nonprofit firms are generally protected against personal liability, which means that their own money, houses and cars are not at risk. This is not true for an unincorporated Legal. Disadvantages: The disadvantages include a large amount of paperwork, costs such as hiring a lawyer to prepare their papers, and time and energy to meet regulatory requirements and growth of your organization. There will also be restrictions, such does not pay for its directors, not political campaigns or lobbying, and when his organization folds, its assets must be given to another nonprofit. But if the benefits of becoming a nonprofit corporation and feel the benefits outweigh the disadvantages, which could be ready to go forward. 'A major difference between nonprofit and for-profit corporation for which a non-profit non-issuance of shares or pay dividends (for example, the code of the Commonwealth of Virginia includes the Non-Stock Corporation Act, used to incorporate nonprofit entities) and not can not enrich its directors. However, as for-profit corporations, nonprofit perhaps employees and can compensate their directors within reasonable limits. "More: http://nonprofit.about.com/od/nonprofitbasics/bb/corppros.htm
