Does seem strange if the father gives the bride away?
My parents are happily married, and there is nothing prevents me from reaching my dad giving me away at my wedding. But I will not. I see it as a return to the days when women were not allowed to sign contracts without her father or husband for help. My father was my mentor, but he is no more. I do not feel like moving from an "owner" to another. I know that many women want their parents to give them, and that's fine with me. What I know is going to a wedding where the bride came just down the aisle by herself, she believes that there is something wrong with family or hated his father or something?
Sounds like he was consumed by the liberation of women in ancient traditions. If it bothers you many, I see why you want to go solo but I would like to speak with his father more than anything. Many of these days see marriage as something only for the couple, but is much more. Partners with families, and probably bring children into the world will soon (within 10 years of marriage). A marriage is for families, and when you start to change the meaning of marriage to all types of changes involved. Not yet, may not be much, but remember that your father grew up. There are probably many dreams as you would with you during your many years. It could have planned her marriage and how they kind of go. Just talk to your father, and even her mother before returning to tradition.
